Boat Appraisals

Depending on the age of the vessel, the size and purchase price you will want to get a boat appraisal.  In some cases this may be required by the lender and the insurance company.  A boat appraisal can tell you all about the boat's history and what may or may not need repaired or addressed.  It will also most importantly provide the boat value to either comfirm the deal you are getting, or send you back to the negotiation table.  Also, remember that all boat values can be tied to book value similar to that of an automobile.  However, especially in older vessels, condition, hours and updates will need to be taken into effect during the appraisal process. 

When looking for a boat appraisal you will want to make sure and use a certified surveyor.  There is an association for this group and you can find one for your location at the link below.

We also recommend you check the hull identification number. This will provide you with information on whether the vessel has been damaged, salvaged, hurricane damaged and even seized. Many of these reports will also list any recalls by the manufacturer so you can assure they have been completed.  You can also source some information through the U.S. Coast Guard.  Links below.
